It’s official. Calnin Design Studio is opening a brick and mortar in my lovely city of Madison, WI. This week, I am sharing my vision and including a story board of how I will design the new studio space. I am leaning into a modern art deco vibe with an English style kitchen display. I know, those styles seem worlds apart, but I am so excited to see the final result. Here’s a preview of what is to come!
Story board with images gathered from Pinterest.
I started pinning photos in my Studio Space Pinterest board of anything that inspired me and drew me in. I didn’t think about a theme or filter anything out just yet, but instead, I allowed my creative side to start gathering information.
Once I felt like I had enough photos to create a mood and aesthetic, I made a ‘story board’ based off of themes, through lines, and colors that complimented each other.

With 750 sq ft total, the studio will be designed to hold a materials library, client meetings, events, and a retail section. I want to make sure it feels like a home and not a cold commercial building…. I would never design that for anyone, but it helps to know what you want to stay away from!
After I selected the inspirational photos, I chose my color scheme based on the story board. Having a color scheme will keep the design cohesive in all the different areas of the studio, which include:
living space
dining space
mock-up kitchen to showcase cabinetry
retail section
welcome/check-out desk
The colors are warm, creamy, vibrant, and achieve a ‘West-Coast meets Wisconsin’ vibe. I also included some font design to set the tone and complete the look.

This image caught my eye as inspiration for a kitchen layout in the studio, along with a retail section. This area of the studio will serve as a dual purpose – a cabinet showroom to demonstrate a cabinet line I will be selling, as well as a beautiful area to display kitchen home goods from Anaway Home.
I know this project will evolve and some of these things may change – it’s important to understand and know the outcome you want to achieve, but it’s equally important to stay open to other possibilities and evolve alongside the project.
That’s it for now – I have SO much more coming your way and I can’t wait to continue to share all the goodies, ups and downs, and beautiful design moments.
